
Prof. Edwin Winkel graduated as a dentist at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, in 1980. At the University of Amsterdam he became in 2000 a Doctor (Ph.D.) after successfully defending his Thesis on ‘The Use of Systemic Antibiotics in Periodontitis Patients’. From 1982 until 2002 he worked at the Department of Periodontology at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam and was involved in a longitudinal epidemiological study (15 year follow-up) of Indonesians with no regular dental care (The Java Study). As a founding partner of the Clinic for Periodontology Amsterdam (Kliniek voor Parodontologie Amsterdam (KvPA)) he specialises, since 1985, in periodontology and implants. He started the first Halitosis Clinic in the Netherlands in 1997. His special subjects are the development of clinical microbiology, the effects of systemic antimicrobial therapies in periodontitis, periimplantitis patients and the diagnoses and therapy of halitosis. He has published widely in these fields. Prof. Winkel is a former Chairman of the Dutch Society of Periodontology (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Parodontologie (NVvP)). Currently he is an active member of several committees within the NVvP and a non executive director of the NVvP BV , a subsidiary (Ltd) of the NVvP. He is a co-founder of the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO). In 1994 and 1997 he, as Honorary Treasurer, contributed to the success of both the EuroPerio 1 and the EuroPerio 2 meetings. He was Honorary Treasurer of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) from 2000 till 2007. Currently he is the Treasurer of Europerio 6 for Stockholm 2009 and an executive board member of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). He was a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (2000-2008) and currently a member of the editorial board of the Journal de Parodontologie & d'Implantologie Orale. At present he is an associate professor at the department of periodontology, University Medical Center Groningen, The Netherlands. He is a regular guest speaker at national and international conferences. |
